Every expat in Vietnam downloads at least one language app. Duolingo, Pimsleur, Babbel, HelloTalk — the promise is consistent: learn Vietnamese in minutes a day, on your schedule, at a fraction of the cost of a teacher. The reality, as most expats discover within 8–12 weeks, is more complicated.
Apps are excellent for one thing: passive vocabulary recognition. They perform poorly — and in some cases produce active misdirection — on the elements of Vietnamese that matter most in real conversation: tones, pronouns, cultural conventions, and real-world transaction language.

Reason 1: Tones Require a Human Ear
Vietnamese has six tones and every one changes meaning.
